MAYOR WALK DESCRIBES THE 2015 BOSTON CULTURAL COUNCIL GRANT WINERS

Supporting a range of arts programs throughout Boston

BOSTON — Today, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced that $303,476 will be awarded to 137 organisations and institutions that support Boston’s culture, arts, and city. 2015 saw 151 applications to the BCC.

Mayor Walsh stated that Boston is striving to be a leader in urban culture. This is possible only if there are supportive and dedicated partners. I am proud that the Boston Cultural Council received funding more than twice this calendar year.

Jennifer Johnson codirector at Charlestown Working Theater stated that support from Boston Cultural Council was essential for organizations like ours. They allow us to develop and implement artistic and educational work that is beneficial to our artists’ community.

The Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture runs the BCC’s operations. Every year, the Massachusetts Cultural Council funds the BCC. It is a state funded agency. In 2015, $163,000.080 was given to Boston by the MCC. Mayor Walsh nearly doubled that amount. The City of Boston received $144419 in 2014 from MCC. In addition, $152,020 through BCC was provided to 55 of 75 applicants.

Mayor Walsh appointed 13 Bostonians the BCC. Every fall, grants from BCC are reviewed to make sure that the programming is relevant and of high quality to diverse Boston audiences.

Mayor Walsh believes that arts are a way to express and reach his vision of a vibrant and healthier Boston. He also renamed Danielle legros Boston’s poet-Laureate and appointed Julie Burros Chief in Arts and Culture. This will manage a culture planning effort that will develop a long term strategy to enrich and consolidate the city’s life via the art.
