Derek Lumpkins is the inaugural Director of Neighborhood Partnerships and Programs at Northeastern Crossing, a dedicated venue for authentic exchanges between Boston residents and the Northeastern University community through programming that fosters dialog, creative collaborations, and new connections.
Derek joined Northeastern University after serving five years as the Executive Director of Discover Roxbury, an artist-run, non-profit organization that promotes civic engagement and economic development through tours, events, and school visits which leverage the arts, culture, and history of the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury. During his tenure, Derek oversaw the expansion of Roxbury Open Studios and the ArtROX! Series, created pop-up galleries and shops in Dudley Square and on Beacon Hill, and helped design walking tours of Roxbury’s arts and music heritage.
Derek enthusiastically believes in developing new opportunities for independent artists and the community as a whole. He has done this, in part, through collaborations and partnerships with institutions and organizations based in Roxbury and around the City of Boston. He sits on the steering committee for ArtMorpheus, and participated on Mayor Walsh’s transition team for arts and culture, and on Governor Patrick’s public art task force. He has also made appearances in The Boston Globe and on CityLine, Chronicle, Basic Black and the Callie Crossley Show.
